Description

The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont are bored aristocrats who amuse themselves with intrigues and play a deadly game of destroying reputations. Merteuil, seeking revenge on a lover who left her, tries to entice Valmont into seducing her ex-lover’s virgin fiancée, Cecile.

Valmont initially refuses, seeing the victim as too easy and offering no real challenge. He is persuaded to change his mind. Merteuil, meanwhile, maintains several lovers and the confidence of society. However, the scheming and cross-scheming falls apart when Valmont falls in love with La Presidente Tourval, but is forced by Merteuil to break with her. When Merteuil fails to honour her bet with Valmont, he exacts a revenge which has tragic consequences for all except the ever wily Merteuil.

Original production starred Cameron Sharp as Valmont and Cathy Bates as Merteuil
